Mecum’s Indianapolis auction opens May 8 with more than 3,000 vehicles, and a Chevrolet-heavy Saturday lineup is already drawing attention. (mecum.com) The sale runs May 8-16 at the Indiana State Fairgrounds, where the venue is listing Dana Mecum’s 39th Annual Original Spring Classic Car Auction with muscle cars, classics, Corvettes, exotics and motorcycles. (mecum.com) (indianastatefairgrounds.com) One of the local tie-ins is Lot K186, a 1976 Chevrolet K10 Scottsdale pickup scheduled for Saturday, May 9, with Bicentennial Package trim and Indianapolis 500 Safety Truck history. Mecum says only 500 of the original trucks were produced. (mecum.com) Another Saturday truck, Lot K169, is a 1987 Chevrolet K10 Silverado with four-wheel drive, a fuel-injected 5.7-liter V-8 and a Rough Country lift. Mecum lists 1987 as the first year for fuel injection in a Chevrolet pickup and the last model year for the K10. (mecum.com) The car side of the preview reaches deeper into Chevrolet’s rarity file. Mecum has a 1990 Camaro IROC-Z 1LE, Lot S33, cataloged as one of 62 built for 1990 and one of 28 ordered with the higher-horsepower 350 tuned-port-injection V-8. (mecum.com) That Camaro is also listed with 8,598 miles, original Goodyear tires and factory paperwork including the window sticker, build sheet and shipping documents. Mecum says 1990 was the final year for the IROC package. (mecum.com) The other headline Chevrolet is a 1965 Chevelle Z16, Lot F202, set for Friday, May 15. Mecum describes it as one of 201 produced, powered by a 396-cubic-inch V-8 rated at 375 horsepower and backed by a Muncie four-speed manual transmission. (mecum.com) The truck mix helps explain how the collector market has widened. A Yahoo Autos preview of the Indy sale says the Chevrolet pickup group ranges from Advance Design-era trucks to square-body K10s and custom C10 builds, combining restored work trucks with modified street machines. (autos.yahoo.com) That leaves Mecum Indy selling two kinds of scarcity at once: factory-built low-production muscle cars and pickups with either Indianapolis history or modern custom work. The bidding starts May 8, but the Chevrolet-heavy Saturday on May 9 is where that split personality is most visible. (mecum.com) (autos.yahoo.com)
