Meta Shakes Up AI Leadership

This shake-up comes just nine months after Meta invested $14.3 billion for a 49% stake in Scale AI, bringing its founder Alexandr Wang aboard to lead a newly unified Meta Superintelligence Labs. Wang, who became the world's youngest self-made billionaire at 24, was tasked with overseeing all senior AI leaders to accelerate progress toward general intelligence. The new structure decentralizes AI development, splitting responsibilities for next-generation models, codenamed Avocado and Mango, between Wang's research lab and Saba's new applied engineering group. This marks a strategic retreat from the consolidated model, distributing risk instead of concentrating all authority under a single executive. Maher Saba is a long-time Meta executive, previously a VP at Reality Labs known for enforcing Mark Zuckerberg's "Year of Efficiency" mandate. His new group will report directly to CTO Andrew Bosworth and is tasked with building the "data engine"—the critical data pipelines, tooling, and model evaluations required to improve AI models faster. From an engineering standpoint, Saba's organization will feature an unusually flat hierarchy, with a manager-to-employee ratio of up to 1-to-50. This structure is designed to slash bureaucracy and elevate the role of individual contributors, a direct reflection of Zuckerberg's broader goal to make the company more agile. The emphasis on "agentic AI" signals a push toward creating autonomous systems that can make decisions and adapt to new situations with minimal human intervention. Meta's long-term commercial goal is to deploy these AI agents to millions of businesses on its platforms, automating tasks and customer interactions. The reorganization follows reports of internal friction between Wang and other top leaders, including CTO Andrew Bosworth, over the use of Instagram data for AI training. With the creation of Saba's team, Wang has been cut out of direct control over the crucial data pipelines that feed Meta's AI projects.
