Cloud Startup Akave Raises $6.65M Seed
Bay Area cloud infrastructure startup Akave has raised $6.65M in seed funding. The company is launching an S3-compatible object storage service that decouples storage from compute, aiming to give enterprise clients more flexibility and cost savings.
The latest funding round for Akave includes a notable list of investors backing the venture. Participants include Protocol Labs, No Limit Holdings, Blockchange, Lightshift, Blockchain Builders Fund, Big Brain Holdings, Avalanche, and the Filecoin Foundation. This follows a previous $3.45 million pre-seed round, indicating sustained investor confidence in the company's vision. The company was established in 2024 by co-founders with deep roots in the decentralized storage ecosystem. CEO Stefaan Vervaet previously led network growth at Filecoin, while CTO Angelo Schalley and COO Daniel León were also part of the Filecoin ecosystem, giving them firsthand insight into the challenges and opportunities in decentralized data management. Akave is directly targeting the high costs associated with data movement, a significant pain point for enterprises using major cloud providers. The company's platform eliminates egress fees, the charges cloud providers levy to transfer data out of their systems. This move is designed to appeal to companies with large-scale AI and analytics workloads who frequently move large datasets. The core of Akave's strategy is the decoupling of storage from compute, allowing companies to scale each component independently for greater efficiency and cost management. This architecture provides flexibility, enabling businesses to avoid vendor lock-in and utilize different hardware configurations for their storage and computational needs. Akave's platform is built to be a drop-in replacement for existing cloud storage solutions, utilizing a fully S3-compatible API. This compatibility allows businesses to migrate their data and workflows without needing to re-architect their existing pipelines. The platform also offers integrations with major data platforms like Snowflake and Apache Iceberg. Underpinning its service, Akave leverages decentralized technologies and blockchain for enhanced data verifiability and security. For long-term data archiving, the platform utilizes the Filecoin network, providing a decentralized and verifiable storage option. This approach aims to offer up to 80% cost savings compared to traditional centralized cloud storage providers.
