InterDigital Renews Patent License with Sony
Technology R&D company InterDigital has signed a new patent license agreement with Sony. The renewed deal covers patents related to wireless, video, and AI technologies.
- The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, but InterDigital reported near-record revenue of $834 million and record net income of $406.6 million for 2025, driven by its patent licensing model. For 2026, the company projects revenue between $675 million and $775 million. - The agreement gives Sony access to InterDigital's global portfolio of over 30,000 patents and applications, which includes foundational technologies for 5G, Wi-Fi, and video codecs like HEVC and VVC. - This renewal extends a long-term partnership; the two companies previously operated a joint venture called Convida Wireless starting in 2013 to collaborate on research for 5G and the Internet of Things (IoT). - The license covers all of Sony's end-user consumer devices, including smartphones, laptops, connected TVs, and gaming consoles. - The deal is significant as Sony increasingly integrates advanced video and AI capabilities that rely on such patents into its products, like the AI-based recognition in its Alpha cameras and its Edge Analytics solution (REA-C1000) for real-time video production. - InterDigital's business model is focused on research and development, then licensing its "standard-essential patents" to global manufacturers. It holds licenses with other major players like Apple, Samsung, and LG. - The licensing landscape is competitive; InterDigital and Sony run a joint TV licensing program and InterDigital has recently initiated patent infringement lawsuits against television manufacturers Hisense and TCL over video compression technologies.
