Alternative Rock Friday Playlist Drops

@cargoindiedistr's #NewMusicFriday Spotify playlist features HeavenlyIndie, Nightsswimming, and Colossus spanning alt rock, punk, shoegaze, and post-rock. @MerchTablePro also highlighted "Modal Rock Venturists Vol.1" fusing alternative, modal, and psychedelic rock. Fresh playlist curation is hitting social feeds hard.

Legendary indie-pop band Heavenly released their first new album in three decades on February 27, 2026. Titled "Highway to Heavenly," the record arrives 30 years after their last full-length, "Operation Heavenly," in 1996. The album was released on Skep Wax, a label run by original members Amelia Fletcher and Rob Pursey. The new album from the influential British band tackles themes of anger, grief, love, and empathy. It is described as being in opposition to the rise of "cold 'masculine energy'". The release follows the band's reunion for live shows in 2023 and includes surviving original members, with Ian Button on drums. Bath and Bristol-based dream-pop group Nightsswimming announced their sophomore EP, "Melting, Sometimes Bleeding," is set for a May 22, 2026 release via Venn Records. This comes on the heels of their latest single, "Poison Berry," which dropped on February 25, 2026. The band's debut EP, "No Place To Land," was released in 2024. Nightsswimming's sound is influenced by bands like Cocteau Twins, The Cure, and Wolf Alice. Their recent work was produced by Peter Miles and mastered by Simon Scott of Slowdive, further cementing their place in the shoegaze and dream-pop scene. London-based rock experimentalists Hey Colossus also released a new album on February 27, 2026, titled "Heaven Was Wild". Known for their prolific output and evolving sound that incorporates noise rock, post-punk, and psychedelic elements, the band has been a fixture of the UK's underground music scene since 2003. Another London act, Colossus, fronted by John Clay, has been active with a more punk-infused and high-energy sound. This group released an EP titled "The Gods Hate Colossus" in October 2023, showcasing a DIY spirit with influences from '90s industrial rock and progressive post-punk. The curation of playlists by distributors like Cargo Indie Distro plays a significant role in music discovery for independent artists. These platforms act as a modern-day radio, shaping what listeners are exposed to across various sub-genres of alternative music. MerchTablePro's focus on compilations such as "Modal Rock Venturists Vol.1" highlights a trend of genre-blending releases. The fusion of modal jazz concepts with psychedelic and alternative rock points to an ongoing exploration of sonic boundaries within the independent music landscape.
