PharmaGiant.com Expands Generic Offerings
Prescription referral service PharmaGiant.com announced an expansion of its generic medication catalog to increase access to affordable drugs. The company highlighted the upcoming availability of generic Semaglutide as part of its expanded offerings.
Semaglutide is the active ingredient in Novo Nordisk's popular drugs Ozempic, for type 2 diabetes, and Wegovy, for weight management. These medications are part of a class of drugs known as GLP-1 receptor agonists, which help control blood sugar, reduce appetite, and delay stomach emptying. The high demand for these drugs has led to significant revenue for Novo Nordisk and also supply shortages. In the U.S., the monthly list price for Ozempic has been over $900 and for Wegovy over $1,300, creating a substantial market for more affordable generic alternatives. Patent expirations are paving the way for generics, though timelines vary globally. While some patents are expiring in countries like India and Brazil in March 2026, the key U.S. patents for semaglutide are not expected to expire until December 2031. Several pharmaceutical companies, including Sun Pharma, Zydus Lifesciences, and Dr. Reddy's, are preparing to launch generic versions of semaglutide in markets where patents are expiring. This increased competition is expected to drive down prices significantly. In response to market pressure and criticism over high prices, Novo Nordisk has announced it will cut the U.S. list prices for Ozempic and Wegovy, with reductions taking effect in January 2027. The new monthly list price is expected to be around $675 for both. The introduction of generic semaglutide is anticipated to dramatically increase access to these treatments for both diabetes and obesity worldwide. It is estimated that at least one in three people living with obesity globally resides in a country where semaglutide will be available off-patent in 2026.
