LA Forests and Redwoods

- Social feeds are promoting Angeles National Forest for weekend camping and Del Norte Redwoods for coastal hike photography. ( ) - Posts highlight accessible day hikes, dispersed camping spots, and coastal redwood loops suitable for spring conditions. ( ) - These local picks feed a broader trend of 'multi‑park staycations' and nearby nature escapes this season. (x.com)

Southern Californians looking for a fast spring escape are zeroing in on Angeles National Forest, while North Coast travelers are packing cameras for Del Norte Coast Redwoods State Park. (fs.usda.gov, parks.ca.gov) Angeles National Forest sits on Los Angeles County’s edge and the Forest Service describes it as an “urban national forest” serving nearby communities. Its camping pages list both developed campgrounds and dispersed-camping rules now in effect through Dec. 15, 2026. (fs.usda.gov, fs.usda.gov) Those rules are specific: camping outside a developed campground is capped at seven consecutive days a year, and roadside dispersed camping within 300 feet of the centerline of a city, county, or state road is capped at three days a year. Developed campground stays are capped at 14 consecutive days and 21 total days annually. (fs.usda.gov, fs.usda.gov) The Forest Service is also telling visitors to check conditions before they go because road access can change quickly with weather, mudslides, rockfall, debris flows, landslides, or fire activity. Fire restrictions can change without notice, and as of Jan. 23, 2025, the forest’s fire danger level was lowered to “Moderate,” with campfires and stoves requiring a valid California Campfire Permit. (fs.usda.gov, fs.usda.gov, fs.usda.gov) Farther north, Del Norte Coast Redwoods State Park is one of the linked Redwood National and State Parks and was established in 1927, according to California State Parks. The park has about 50% old-growth coast redwood and eight miles of wild coastline. (parks.ca.gov) That mix of forest and ocean is part of the draw in spring. California State Parks describes Damnation Creek as a short, steep route of about four miles round trip through redwoods and spruce toward the coast, while the broader Coastal Trail corridor runs through the park for hikers and bicyclists. (parks.ca.gov, nps.gov) Visitors still need to check current conditions. The National Park Service says conditions at Redwood National and State Parks can change quickly because of weather, road work, wildfire, trail closures, and other alerts, and California State Parks says parts of Del Norte’s Mill Creek acquisition are closed for road construction and forest rehabilitation. (nps.gov, parks.ca.gov) The two destinations fit the same travel pattern: a short-drive mountain camp near Los Angeles or a redwood-and-coast loop near Crescent City, both backed by public-land agencies emphasizing day-use access, campground rules, and live conditions pages. For spring travelers, the practical takeaway is less about viral posts than timing, permits, and closures before the car leaves the driveway. (fs.usda.gov, nps.gov, nps.gov)
