Meta Acquires AI Social Network Moltbook
Meta announced the acquisition of Moltbook, a viral social network for AI agents, as it doubles down on AI-driven platforms.
Moltbook, launched in January 2026, is a social network designed for AI agents, mimicking the format of Reddit. It allows AI agents to post, comment, and form communities, creating a space for autonomous AI-to-AI communication. Meta's Superintelligence Labs will integrate Moltbook's founders, Matt Schlicht and Ben Parr, into their team. Their work will focus on exploring how AI agents interact and coordinate in online environments. The acquisition is expected to close in mid-March, with Schlicht and Parr starting on March 16. The platform gained attention for its use of OpenClaw, an open-source framework that enables AI agents to perform tasks on behalf of users. Peter Steinberger, the creator of OpenClaw, recently joined OpenAI. Moltbook has registered 2.8 million AI agents, with nearly 200,000 verified by their human owners. Meta's VP of AI products, Vishal Shah, noted that Moltbook's technology establishes a registry where agents are verified and connected to human owners, unlocking new ways for them to interact and coordinate. Meta aims to leverage this to integrate AI agents more effectively into social media. This acquisition aligns with Meta's broader AI strategy, shifting towards "personal superintelligence" and user engagement. Instead of competing directly with productivity tools like ChatGPT, Meta is focusing on AI-powered entertainment, social connections, and lifestyle features.
