SF Music Week Hosts Artist Development Day
SF Music Week is holding an Artist Development Day today at the Public Works venue. The event offers workshops and provides resources for local musicians aiming to advance their careers in the industry.
The Artist Development Day is a key component of the second annual SF Music Week, a citywide initiative launched in 2025 to support and revitalize San Francisco's music scene. The week-long event is a collaboration between Noise Pop, SF LIVE, and the San Francisco Office of Economic and Workforce Development (OEWD). Today's programming is designed to address the business side of being a musician, offering practical knowledge to help independent artists navigate the industry. This includes panels on topics like breaking free from social media algorithms and opportunities for small group consultations with industry leaders. Attendees can get direct advice from professionals representing organizations such as The Recording Academy, Audio Engineering Society, and California Lawyers for the Arts. Featured speakers include prominent figures like comedian and director W. Kamau Bell and artist ambassador for OpenWav, Lyrics Born. One-on-one sessions are also available with facilitators like Ms. White 1st Lady of Frisco, focusing on brand identity and media strategies. The event is being held at Public Works, a multifaceted nightclub and event space in the heart of the Mission District known for its forward-thinking DJ lineups and commitment to local arts. The venue has a total capacity of up to 1,000 people across its multiple rooms. This initiative comes at a critical time for Bay Area musicians, who face significant challenges including fierce competition for gigs and some of the highest venue and living costs in the country. The tech boom has further impacted the scene, leading to the closure of iconic venues due to rising rents. SF Music Week aims to counteract these pressures by fostering a more sustainable and vibrant music ecosystem. The week's events, which run from February 23 to March 1, also include an industry summit, live performances, and studio tours.
