DOE Issues Stricter Energy Standards for Electric Motors

The Department of Energy has issued a final rule establishing new energy conservation standards for small electric motors. The rule, now published in the Federal Register, will require manufacturers to improve energy efficiency in a wide range of motor products sold in the U.S. Impacted companies will need to update product designs and compliance documentation to meet the new requirements.

- The new standards are the result of a joint recommendation submitted to the DOE by a working group that included the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA), along with efficiency advocates like the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy and several utility companies. - Over a 30-year period, the Department of Energy projects these updated standards will save American businesses up to $8.8 billion on utility bills and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 92 million metric tons. - This rule expands regulations to previously uncovered motor types, including certain split-phase and permanent split capacitor motors between 0.25 and 3 horsepower. - Compliance for the updated standards for most medium electric motors is required by June 1, 2027, with standards for newly covered fractional horsepower motors taking effect on January 1, 2029. - The rule will require many motors in the 100 to 250 horsepower range to meet NEMA Super Premium (IE4) efficiency levels, while some previously unregulated motors between 500 and 750 horsepower must now meet NEMA Premium (IE3) standards. - The updates are designed to harmonize U.S. standards more closely with those in the European Union, which helps manufacturers who compete in the global market by streamlining product designs. - A related updated test procedure rule, which took effect in October 2023, requires motor nameplates to list only the specific voltage at which the motor achieves its certified efficiency rating, ending the practice of listing broad voltage ranges.
