Brother Brontë Novel Now Available

Fernando A. Flores's literary novel Brother Brontë is now available in hardcover from MCD, with paperback release scheduled for February 10, 2026. The book is generating pre-publication buzz for Flores's distinctive voice and genre-blending fiction approach.

- The novel is a dystopian adventure set in the year 2038 in a surreal, poisoned version of Three Rivers, Texas, where an authoritarian mayor has outlawed reading. The plot follows two best friends, Neftalí and Proserpina, as they fight back against the regime and protect the last novel of a mysterious author, which is also titled *Brother Brontë*. - Flores's previous novel, *Tears of the Trufflepig*, was long-listed for the Center for Fiction First Novel Prize and named a best book of 2019 by Tor.com. He is also the recipient of an Alfredo Cisneros Del Moral Foundation grant and won the Writers' League of Texas Discovery Prize in Fiction in 2018. - The story directly engages with contemporary issues, with critics noting it serves as a biting critique of book bans and late capitalism. The setting reflects real-world changes in South Texas, where the expansion of tech companies has impacted working-class communities. - Early reviews describe Flores's writing style as a "mordant, gonzo romp" and "psychedelic," with an "exhilarating punk, D.I.Y. aplomb." Author Robin Sloan, who wrote *Mr. Penumbra's 24-hour Bookstore*, compared Flores's work to that of Octavia Butler and William Gibson. - The book was longlisted for the 2026 PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction and was named a Most Anticipated Book of 2025 by publications including the *Los Angeles Times* and *Town & Country*. - Flores was born in Reynosa, Tamaulipas, Mexico, and grew up in South Texas. His work is heavily influenced by his upbringing in the borderlands, with his fiction often exploring a U.S.–Mexico border country rendered with satire and surrealism. - The publisher, MCD, is an imprint of Farrar, Straus and Giroux known for releasing genre-bending and critically acclaimed fiction, including Jeff VanderMeer's Southern Reach trilogy.
