Capture and distribution go immersive and edge-aware

NAB demos show capture formats and delivery plumbing widening: Blackmagic plans a camera for live production on Apple Immersive Video, pre-NAB events are highlighting immersive workflow showcases, and vendors like Appear and Lumen are pitching edge-oriented platform expansions and hybrid distribution offerings. Broadcasters are arriving in Las Vegas with a bigger pitch than new cameras: they want to capture more immersive video and move it over more distributed networks. (tvtechnology.com) (svgeurope.org) Blackmagic Design said it will launch the URSA Cine Immersive 100G at the National Association of Broadcasters Show, which runs April 18-22, 2026, in Las Vegas. The company said the camera is designed for live production in Apple Immersive Video for Apple Vision Pro. (tvtechnology.com 1) (tvtechnology.com 2) Apple Immersive Video is Apple’s format for three-dimensional, 180-degree video with spatial audio, and Blackmagic said its new system uses 100 Gigabit Ethernet to move enough data for live output. Trade coverage said the camera uses dual 8K-by-8K sensors and 16 stops of dynamic range. (tvtechnology.com) (newsshooter.com) That same shift is showing up before the main show floor opens. JB&A’s Pre-NAB Technology Event is set for April 17-18 at the Flamingo Las Vegas, where the distributor said Barco will stage an immersive workflow demonstration for live event production and venue experiences. (tvtechnology.com 1) (tvtechnology.com 2) In plain terms, the workflow problem is no longer just shooting video; it is getting huge files and live feeds from cameras to switching rooms, cloud systems and viewers without delay. Vendors at this year’s show are answering that with more bandwidth at capture and more processing pushed closer to where feeds enter the network. (tvtechnology.com) (svgeurope.org) Appear said it is expanding its X Platform “from core to edge,” adding Appear XM for estate management and highlighting the general availability of the Appear X5 and the SIx300 Serial Digital Interface and Internet Protocol gateway module. The company said customers are scaling live production and contribution across more sites, formats and Internet Protocol infrastructure. (svgeurope.org) The edge in this case means processing video nearer stadiums, venues or local facilities instead of sending every signal back to a central hub first. SVG Europe reported that National Broadcasting Company Universal used Appear’s platform in a deployment that raised density at edge sites by 200%. (svgeurope.org 1) (svgeurope.org 2) Lumen Technologies is making a related argument on distribution. In a release published April 14, the company said its Vyvx Hybrid Distribution service is built as a fiber-first platform to help broadcasters handle an expected reduction in satellite capacity for live sports, news and major events. (nationaltoday.com) (lumen.com) That leaves this year’s National Association of Broadcasters demos pointing in one direction: more immersive pictures at the camera, and more flexible Internet Protocol and fiber paths between the venue and the audience. The products will be tested in public in Las Vegas this week. (tvtechnology.com) (svgeurope.org)
