A 17-year-old boy was killed early Saturday, May 30, after a Chevrolet Camaro carrying four teenagers collided with a Recology truck on eastbound Interstate 80 in San Francisco and went over the side of an elevated off-ramp, authorities said. The California Highway Patrol said the crash happened at about 1:30 a.m. near the Seventh Street offramp. Three other teens in the Camaro were injured and taken to a hospital. CHP officer Mark Andrews said alcohol and drugs did not appear to be factors, and investigators were examining speed. ### Where did the car leave the roadway? Eastbound I-80 near the elevated Seventh Street offramp was the site of the crash, according to Andrews. He said a gray Chevrolet Camaro was traveling in the fast lane approaching the offramp when it clipped the left front of a Recology truck. The impact sent both vehicles into crash-absorbing sand barrels at the top of the exit, Andrews said. The truck was able to stop on the roadway, but the Camaro continued forward, went over the metal bridge railing and fell about 25 feet into the San Francisco Police Department impound lot at 450 Seventh St. ### What happened after the Camaro went over the railing? The Camaro struck several unoccupied vehicles in the impound lot and flipped onto its roof, Andrews said. The car then came to rest atop another unoccupied vehicle. San Francisco firefighters had to extricate two rear-seat passengers from the wreckage, according to the CHP and local reports citing the agency. The driver was able to get out of the car on his own. ### Who was killed and who was hurt? A 17-year-old boy who was riding in the back seat was pronounced dead at the scene, the CHP said. Andrews said the teen was not wearing a seat belt. An 18-year-old rear-seat passenger was taken to a hospital with major injuries, authorities said. The 18-year-old driver and a 17-year-old front-seat passenger were hospitalized with moderate injuries. KTVU reported that the dead teen’s identity was not released because he was a minor. ABC7 reported that the San Mateo Union High School District said he was a member of Hillsdale High School’s Class of 2026. ### What do investigators say caused the crash? CHP officers said the Camaro made an unsafe movement to the right before hitting the truck. KTVU, citing a CHP statement, reported that investigators described it as an “unsafe turning movement.” Mark Andrews told local outlets that alcohol and drugs do not appear to be factors in the crash. He said investigators were looking at speed as a possible factor. Both the truck driver and the 18-year-old Camaro driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators, KTVU reported, citing the CHP. ### What did Recology and the school district say? Recology said in a statement carried by ABC7: “Safety is our top priority at Recology, and we are working with the proper authorities to determine exactly what happened.” The San Mateo Union High School District said the dead teen was part of the Hillsdale High School community. “There are no words that can fully capture the grief and shock of losing a member of our Hillsdale High School family,” the district said, according to ABC7. ### What happens next in the case? The California Highway Patrol said the investigation was continuing as of Monday, June 1. Authorities had not announced any arrests or charges in the case. Monday was also the date the San Mateo Union High School District said it would make mental health resources available to students after the death of the Hillsdale High School senior.
