Unleash Gets $35M for AI Code
Norwegian startup Unleash announced a $35 million funding round to scale its open-source platform that helps enterprises safely govern AI-generated code. The feature management platform provides crucial guardrails as AI-written code becomes more common in large organizations balancing speed and security.
The latest funding round was led by London-based One Peak, with participation from existing investors Spark Capital, Frontline Ventures, and Firstminute Capital. This Series B round brings Unleash's total funding to $51.5 million, following a $14 million Series A in March 2022. The company has reportedly doubled its annual recurring revenue each year since its Series A. Unleash's core product is an open-source "FeatureOps" platform built around feature flags. These flags act as conditional switches in the code, allowing developers to turn specific functionalities on or off at runtime without a full redeployment. This capability is crucial for managing AI-generated code, which can be rolled back feature by feature if issues arise. The company was founded in Oslo in 2015 by CEO Egil Østhus and CTO Ivar Østhus. The open-source project began in 2014 to solve the daily pain of decoupling deployment from release. Its open-source platform has garnered over 13,000 stars on GitHub and has been downloaded more than 40 million times. While AI coding assistants accelerate development, they also introduce risks like "hallucinations" and embedded vulnerabilities from training on vast open-source datasets. Research from DORA indicates that for every 25% increase in an organization's AI adoption, software delivery stability drops by 7%. Unleash counts major enterprises like Prudential Financial, Lloyds Banking Group, Wayfair, and Lenovo among its 500+ paying customers. These companies, particularly those in highly regulated industries, use the platform to ensure governance and compliance as they adopt AI-assisted development. The feature management market includes heavily capitalized players like LaunchDarkly, which has raised $330 million, and Harness, valued at $3.7 billion. Unleash differentiates itself with its open-source foundation, allowing enterprises to start with a free, self-hosted version before migrating to a commercial plan.
