PharmaGiant to Launch Generic Semaglutide
PharmaGiant.com has announced an expansion of its affordable generic medications, including an upcoming generic version of semaglutide. The move is expected to increase competition and drive down costs for the popular diabetes and weight-management drug.
Danish pharmaceutical company Novo Nordisk is the developer of semaglutide, which it markets under the brand names Ozempic for diabetes and Wegovy for weight management. The development of semaglutide was a lengthy process, with research beginning in the 1990s and the drug finally being approved by the FDA in 2017 for diabetes. Initially developed for type 2 diabetes, researchers noticed that a significant side effect of semaglutide was weight loss. This led to further clinical trials specifically focused on its efficacy as a weight-loss treatment, resulting in the approval of Wegovy for this purpose. The main patent for semaglutide in the United States is not expected to expire until December 2031. This extended patent protection is due to patent term adjustments and extensions. In other countries, such as India and Brazil, key patents are expiring much sooner, paving the way for generic competition in those markets. The high cost of Ozempic and Wegovy in the U.S., with monthly prices reaching nearly $1,000 and $1,349 respectively, has been a subject of public scrutiny. In response to growing competition and pressure, Novo Nordisk has announced plans to launch its own lower-priced versions of its semaglutide products. Several other pharmaceutical companies are also preparing to enter the market with their own generic versions of semaglutide. This includes companies like Sandoz and Biocon, who are targeting launches in the coming years. In India, several companies are expected to launch their generics as soon as the patent expires.
