Atlantic Salmon Recalled Over Potential Listeria Contamination

Slade Gorton & Co., Inc. has recalled a lot of Wellsley Farms Farm-Raised Atlantic Salmon due to potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes. The affected salmon was sold at BJ’s Wholesale Club. The bacterium poses significant health risks, particularly to pregnant women, newborns, adults 65 or older, and people with weakened immune systems.

The specific batch of Wellsley Farms Farm-Raised Atlantic Salmon recalled is lot number 3896, sold in 2-lb bags. These products were available at BJ's Wholesale Club stores in Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Virginia between January 31 and February 7, 2026. The contamination was discovered after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) collected a random sample of the product for testing. Slade Gorton & Co., Inc., the distributor, is investigating the source of the contamination. As of the recall announcement, no illnesses have been reported. *Listeria monocytogenes* is a resilient bacterium that can survive and multiply in refrigerated conditions, making it a persistent challenge in ready-to-eat foods like smoked and cured salmon. Contamination often occurs in the processing environment after the fish has been cooked or smoked, with areas like brining and slicing equipment being potential hotspots for cross-contamination. While most healthy individuals may only experience short-term symptoms like fever, nausea, and diarrhea, listeriosis can be severe. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that approximately 1,600 people get listeriosis each year in the U.S., with about 260 resulting in death. It is the third-leading cause of death from foodborne illness in the United States. Recalls of salmon products due to potential *Listeria* contamination are not uncommon. In recent years, several other brands have issued recalls for similar products, including Kirkland Signature smoked salmon sold at Costco. These incidents highlight the ongoing food safety challenges within the seafood processing industry.
