Southwest carry‑on rumor

A report says Southwest is studying a policy that would ban standard carry‑on bags on its cheapest ticketed fares, forcing those customers to check bags instead. Southwest Airlines is studying whether to bar standard carry-on bags on its cheapest tickets, according to a report published April 11 that the airline has not confirmed. (viewfromthewing.com) The report, by aviation blog View From the Wing, said Southwest is considering a rule that would force customers on its lowest fare to check larger cabin bags instead of bringing them onboard. Southwest’s current policy still allows every ticketed passenger one carry-on bag and one personal item for free. (viewfromthewing.com) (southwest.com) Southwest has already changed the economics around bags. For reservations ticketed or changed on or after April 9, 2026, its optional travel charges page lists a first checked bag at $45 and a second at $55 on Basic, Choice, and Choice Preferred fares, while carry-on bags remain free. (southwest.com) (swamedia.com) The airline has also been rebuilding its fare ladder. In a July 2025 announcement, Southwest said it would introduce “reimagined fare products,” including a Basic fare, and give different seat and bag benefits to higher-paying customers, cardholders, and elite members. (southwestairlinesinvestorrelations.com) That shift continued into 2026. Southwest said assigned seating and a new group-based boarding process began with flights operating on January 27, 2026, replacing the open-seating system that had defined the airline for decades. (southwestairlinesinvestorrelations.com) Company filings tie those changes to a broader turnaround effort. In its fourth-quarter and full-year 2025 results, Southwest said 2025 included bag fees, basic economy fares, assigned seating, extra-legroom seating, loyalty-program changes, and wider online distribution. (southwestairlinesinvestorrelations.com) Pressure for a reset had been building since Elliott Investment Management disclosed an investment of about $1.9 billion in June 2024 and pushed Southwest to improve margins and overhaul strategy. Elliott said at the time it held an approximately 11 percent economic interest in the company. (sec.gov) Southwest’s public materials do not show a carry-on ban for Basic fares today. Its fare rules and baggage pages still say Basic customers can bring one carry-on and one personal item, even as checked-bag perks are reserved for pricier fares, elite members, and co-branded credit cardholders. (southwest.com 1) (southwest.com 2) If Southwest adopts the rumored rule, it would turn carry-on space into another fare-based perk. As of April 12, 2026, though, the airline’s published policy still lets Basic passengers bring a standard carry-on onboard. (viewfromthewing.com) (southwest.com)
