Killer Mike Defends Magic City Night

Killer Mike is vocally defending the Atlanta Hawks' "Magic City Night," an event honoring the city's iconic strip club. Despite ticket sales spike and public backlash, Killer Mike dismissed critics, telling them to "shut the f*** up" and doubling down on Atlanta's unique cultural identity.

The Atlanta Hawks' "Magic City Night" on March 16 is a tribute to the influential 40-year-old strip club, recognized as a cultural institution in the city. The event, held during a game against the Orlando Magic, is slated to feature Magic City's famous lemon pepper wings, a halftime performance by Atlanta rapper T.I., and exclusive merchandise. The promotion has drawn criticism from some, including San Antonio Spurs center Luke Kornet and former Hawks player Al Horford. Kornet expressed concern that celebrating a strip club could "reflect poorly" on the NBA and conflict with respecting women. In response, Magic City's management assured that the event at the arena would not feature any nudity. Killer Mike, an Atlanta native and rapper, has been a vocal defender of the event, arguing that Magic City is a significant Black-owned business that has provided opportunities for dancers for over three decades. He pointed to the club's role in the city's economic and cultural ecosystem, comparing its impact on Black entertainers to the historic Playboy Clubs. Magic City's influence extends deep into Atlanta's hip-hop scene, with many artists crediting the club's DJs with breaking new records. The club has been called the "Black Studio 54" and was the subject of a STARZ docuseries titled "Magic City: An American Fantasy," executive-produced by Jermaine Dupri and Hawks co-owner Jami Gertz. Despite the controversy, or perhaps because of it, the themed night has led to a surge in interest and ticket sales. The Hawks organization has framed the night as a celebration of Atlanta's unique culture and identity, fitting within their season's broader effort to feature local artists and traditions.
