Oil Prices Spike Amid Middle East Tensions

Brent crude oil surged above $100 per barrel following Iranian attacks on shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. The 9.2% single-day increase was the largest since May 2020, heightening supply concerns and rattling global markets. Analysts warn prolonged disruptions could permanently alter energy markets, leading to higher costs for consumers and businesses.

The spike follows confirmed Iranian attacks on commercial ships near the Strait of Hormuz and Iraq's port of Basra. This is viewed as an escalation of pressure on the U.S. and Israel by squeezing the oil-rich Gulf region. The aim is to threaten global economic stability amidst the ongoing conflict. The Strait of Hormuz is a critical choke point for global oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG) supply. Approximately 20% of the world's oil and LNG transits through this waterway daily. Major shipping companies, wary of risks to their crews and struggling with insurance, have largely suspended sailings through the strait. Two oil tankers were attacked near Iraq and Kuwait, intensifying concerns about prolonged oil supply constraints. Footage showed the tankers ablaze, with Iraqi sources attributing the attacks to Iran. Iraq has reportedly shut down all its oil ports following the incidents. The International Energy Agency (IEA) has warned of the largest supply disruption in the history of the global oil market. They also announced the release of record amounts of strategic oil reserves to mitigate market disruptions. The IEA estimates that key producing countries in the Gulf have already cut oil output by at least 10 million barrels per day. Despite attacks, Iranian crude oil exports have continued at a near-normal pace. Tanker tracking data indicates Iran exported about 13.7 million barrels of crude since the start of the U.S.-Israeli attacks. This is attributed to Iran's use of a "shadow fleet" to circumvent sanctions.
