India Deploys AI-Powered 'KIBO' Devices for Accessible Learning
In India, AI-powered KIBO devices are being deployed to provide accessible learning for students with visual and hearing impairments. The hardware solution represents a trend toward innovative assistive technologies that could influence future integrations with learning management systems and other educational software.
The KIBO ecosystem, developed by Bengaluru-based Trestle Labs, includes not only the KIBO XS hardware but also a mobile app and a web portal called Kibo Desk. This suite of tools allows users to listen to, translate, and digitize printed, handwritten, and digital content in real-time. The technology supports over 60 global languages, with a specific focus on 12 Indian languages, addressing a critical gap in assistive technologies which have historically been English-centric. Founded in 2017 by Akshita Sachdeva and Bonny Dave, Trestle Labs aims to break down barriers to education and employment for individuals with visual impairments. The inspiration for KIBO, which stands for "Knowledge in a Box," came from the founders' direct interactions with the visually impaired community and witnessing their daily challenges with accessing printed information. The company recently gained wider visibility and funding through its appearance on Shark Tank India Season 3. As of early 2024, KIBO has empowered over 100,000 visually impaired individuals across nine countries and has been implemented in more than 600 institutions. One notable deployment involved a partnership with Samarthanam Trust for the Disabled, which distributed Kibo Desk devices to 2,000 students across 27 colleges. The KIBO platform is designed for scalability, targeting a $1.8 billion global assistive technology market for visually impaired students in the education sector. Trestle Labs is actively partnering with distributors to expand its reach, particularly in Asian and African markets. The technology's ability to handle various content formats and languages makes it a versatile tool for creating more inclusive learning environments.
