Bengaluru to Receive ₹512 Crore for City Projects
The Karnataka state government has received a total of ₹2,245 crore in funds, of which ₹512.68 crore has been specifically allocated for projects in Bengaluru. The capital is expected to be used for infrastructure development and other initiatives within the city. This infusion of funds aims to support Bengaluru's continued growth.
- This funding is part of a larger ₹2,141.57 crore package approved by the Karnataka Cabinet to upgrade the city's infrastructure. The package consists of ₹1,241.57 crore under the Special Infrastructure Project (SIP) for roads and drains, and ₹900 crore from the Chief Minister's Infrastructure Development Programme (CMIDP) for ward-level projects. - The funds are designated for specific civic upgrades, including asphalting, resurfacing, and improving arterial and sub-arterial roads, as well as enhancing footpaths and drainage systems to address long-standing issues like potholes and flooding. - This allocation is a component of a much broader, multi-year vision for the city's development, with Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar previously outlining plans for a ₹1 lakh crore infrastructure overhaul. - Major projects within this larger vision include a 40-km twin tunnel network (est. ₹42,500 crore), a 74-km Bengaluru Business Corridor (est. ₹27,000 crore), and 110 km of elevated corridors (est. ₹15,000 crore) to ease congestion. - The government is also planning a 9,000-acre township near Bidadi, which will include a dedicated 2,000-acre "AI City" to foster development in the artificial intelligence sector. - To finance these ambitious projects, the government is employing hybrid models; for instance, the proposed 16.75 km tunnel road will be developed under a Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) model, where the government contributes 40% of the cost and a private concessionaire funds the remaining 60% in exchange for toll rights. - Previous infrastructure pushes have operated under the Amrutha Nagarothana Scheme, which in 2022-23 was a ₹6,000 crore grant for Bengaluru to develop roads, lakes, parks, and public health centers. - These infrastructure initiatives are part of a 25-year urban transformation plan aimed at creating a statewide "Traffic Grid" to ensure infrastructure development keeps pace with economic growth, a key concern for the city's tech and startup ecosystem.
