Utah Selected for Electric Flight Program
The U.S. Department of Transportation selected Utah as a lead state in a 3-year pilot program testing electric aircraft and eVTOL technologies.
The program, known as uFLY, is a collaboration between Utah, Oregon, Idaho, Arizona, and Oklahoma. It will involve real-world flight operations to evaluate how advanced aircraft can support cargo delivery, emergency response, wildfire response, and passenger transport. The initiative brings together over 30 public and private partners, including BETA Technologies, Ampaire, Joby Aviation, and Lockheed Martin. Testing will occur in diverse environments, from urban areas to mountainous terrain, to assess the broad applications of eVTOL technology. UDOT already uses mobile command centers with satellite connectivity to monitor flight data and coordinate testing. This infrastructure will support data collection during the pilot program. Utah's diverse geography, from snowy peaks to deserts, provides an ideal environment for rigorous technical testing. State leaders hope to demonstrate air taxis during the 2034 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City.
