New Mexico Trout Limits Hit

A fresh New Mexico fishing report highlights strong trout action at Oasis Park Lake, where multiple anglers including veterans and retirees recently caught their limits. The report also details hot spots for bass and catfish across the state, suggesting a promising early-spring fishing season for both locals and traveling anglers.

The standard daily bag limit for trout in most New Mexico waters is five fish. However, regulations can vary significantly depending on the location, with some "Special Trout Waters" having reduced limits of two or even zero fish to enhance conservation or grow trophy-size trout. Oasis Park Lake is part of New Mexico's winter trout stocking program, which introduces catchable-size rainbow trout into waters that are otherwise too warm for them in the summer. The New Mexico Department of Game and Fish raises and stocks over 2 million fish annually from several hatcheries across the state to provide recreational fishing opportunities. The strong trout action signals the start of the productive spring fishing season. As winter ice recedes and water temperatures rise, fish become more active and begin to feed more aggressively after a period of winter dormancy, making them easier for anglers to catch. Recreational fishing is a significant component of New Mexico's economy. Boating and fishing are among the highest contributors to the state's outdoor recreation sector, which in 2023 generated $3.2 billion and supported over 29,000 jobs.
