Aave Governance in Conflict Over $51M Funding Proposal

A governance dispute has intensified within the Aave DeFi protocol ahead of a vote on a $51 million funding allocation. Key contributors have publicly raised concerns regarding past spending, transparency, and strategic direction. The conflict is playing out in governance forums and social media, creating a significant test for the protocol's decentralized decision-making process.

The controversy centers on the "Aave Will Win" proposal, which requests approximately $51 million from the DAO for Aave Labs, the protocol's founding entity. This funding is intended to cover core development and ongoing maintenance. In exchange, Aave Labs has proposed that 100% of revenue from Aave-branded products would be directed to the Aave DAO treasury. Marc Zeller, founder of the Aave Chan Initiative (ACI), has been a vocal critic, publishing a detailed audit of Aave Labs' past performance. Zeller's analysis claims that Aave Labs has already received roughly $86 million through its 2017 ICO, venture capital funding, direct DAO payments, and what he terms "unapproved" swap fees. The core of the dispute lies in questions of financial transparency and return on investment for the DAO. Critics point to several Aave Labs initiatives they claim were unprofitable or failed, such as the GHO stablecoin's initial struggle to maintain its peg and the Horizon RWA market, which reportedly cost the DAO $24 for every $1 earned. Adding to the turmoil, core technical contributor BGD Labs announced it will not renew its contract with the DAO, citing friction with Aave Labs and disagreements over the future development of Aave V3 and the proposed V4. This departure raises concerns about who will maintain and develop the protocol's core infrastructure. The proposal also seeks to ratify Aave V4 as the protocol's future and freeze new feature development for the current revenue-generating V3, a move that has been bundled into the single funding vote. Community members have pushed for unbundling these items and for greater accountability, including wallet disclosures, before any funds are distributed.
