Elon Musk Bets Business Empire on AI
Elon Musk is reportedly reorganizing his entire business empire—including Tesla, SpaceX, and xAI—to be centered on artificial intelligence. This strategic realignment is described as betting the future of his companies on AI's success. As part of this push, Musk has publicly sparred with rivals, accusing competitor Anthropic AI of being 'misanthropic' following its latest large funding round.
- To accelerate AI development, Musk has vertically integrated his companies, with SpaceX officially acquiring xAI in February 2026 to create a combined entity valued at approximately $1.25 trillion. This merger aims to leverage SpaceX's Starlink satellite network and future orbital data centers to provide the immense computing power needed for xAI's artificial intelligence research. - The strategy involves creating solar-powered orbital data centers to overcome the energy and cooling limitations of terrestrial data centers. Musk's long-term vision even includes building a factory on the Moon to manufacture AI-powered satellites, which could then be deployed using an electromagnetic mass driver. - At Tesla, the push for AI is embodied by the Optimus humanoid robot, which now features 22 degrees of freedom in its hands and is controlled by the same AI system developed for Tesla's vehicles. The goal is for Optimus to handle tasks that are repetitive or dangerous for humans, with Musk stating the robot has the potential to be more significant than the car business. - Tesla's custom-designed Dojo supercomputer is a key component of this strategy, built specifically to process vast amounts of video data from its fleet of over 4 million vehicles to train the neural networks for its Full Self-Driving (FSD) system. - SpaceX utilizes AI and machine learning to optimize rocket trajectories, automate the deployment and maintenance of the Starlink satellite constellation, and enable the autonomous landing of its reusable rockets. AI algorithms also analyze mission data in real-time to predict and prevent potential malfunctions. - xAI's chatbot, Grok, is designed to provide real-time information from the X social media platform and has multimodal capabilities, allowing it to process both text and images. Musk has positioned Grok as a more "truth-seeking" alternative to competitors, with its latest version, Grok-3, claimed to have over ten times the computing power of its predecessor. - This AI-centric approach extends to Tesla's vehicles, with the upcoming "AI5" hardware, expected in early 2027, projected to be ten times more powerful than the current Hardware 4. In the interim, a "Hardware 4.5" with a three-chip configuration is being introduced as a bridge to the more advanced system.
