Beamdog Patches Baldur's Gate After 14 Years
Beamdog released surprise patches for Baldur's Gate 1 and 2 Enhanced Editions, 14 years after the classic RPGs' initial release. The update signals continued support and community engagement for these legendary titles, offering players both nostalgia and modernized gameplay enhancements.
The new 2.7 beta patch arrives roughly five years after the last major update, Patch 2.6, which in 2021 upgraded the games to 64-bit, squashed hundreds of bugs, and added new character customization options. That patch was a significant overhaul, ensuring the classic titles would run smoothly on modern hardware. This latest update focuses on quality-of-life improvements, most notably providing native support for Apple Silicon Macs and revamping the Steam cloud saving functionality to be more intuitive. Previously, players had to enable cloud saves within the game's settings, a quirk that could lead to fears of lost progress. Alongside the technical enhancements, the patch incorporates several community-created translations. Baldur's Gate 2: Enhanced Edition will see new language support for Brazilian Portuguese, Czech, and Ukrainian, while Icewind Dale: Enhanced Edition receives Hungarian and Japanese translations. The unexpected update has been met with enthusiasm from the community and even earned a nod of approval from Larian Studios, the developers of the acclaimed Baldur's Gate 3. Beamdog has stated their goal is to ensure the long-term stability of these classic RPGs as technology continues to evolve.
