GSMA Launches 'Open Telco AI' Push

The GSMA, the mobile industry's global association, has launched "Open Telco AI," an initiative to speed up the development and deployment of AI in telecommunications. The project aims to create open standards for telco-grade AI, fostering collaboration to build more efficient and secure networks.

The initiative is backed by major industry players, with AT&T and AMD as founding supporters. Other participants include global operators like China Mobile, Deutsche Telekom, Orange, SK Telecom, Telefónica, and Vodafone, alongside tech giants such as Google Cloud, IBM, and Nvidia. This push addresses a key shortcoming: general-purpose AI models often fail at telco-specific tasks, struggling to interpret complex network data or understand technical standards accurately. According to GSMA Intelligence, only 16% of generative AI deployments in the telecom sector have been applied to network operations, highlighting a significant gap between AI's potential and its current impact. As part of the launch, AT&T is releasing a family of open, hardware-agnostic AI models trained on public data. AMD is providing the necessary computing power for training and fine-tuning these models through its GPU platforms and its cloud partner, TensorWave. The project includes a central portal offering shared resources to developers and researchers. This includes access to curated datasets, open models, and a new "Telco Capability Index," a benchmarking tool designed to evaluate how well AI systems perform on specific telecom-related tasks. This initiative follows the playbook of the GSMA's Open Gateway program, which focuses on creating standardized Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) for universal access to network capabilities. Both initiatives aim to foster a more open, interoperable ecosystem for innovation on top of telecom networks. The move comes as the market for AI in telecommunications is projected to expand significantly.
