Amazon Web Services on April 28 opened a limited preview that brings OpenAI models, Codex, and Bedrock Managed Agents into Amazon Bedrock. (aboutamazon.com) (aws.amazon.com) Bedrock is Amazon’s managed platform for running foundation models through one set of application programming interfaces, with Amazon saying it already serves more than 100,000 organizations. The new preview lets customers call OpenAI systems from that same AWS layer. (aws.amazon.com) (aboutamazon.com) Amazon said the preview includes the latest OpenAI models, OpenAI’s Codex coding agent, and Bedrock Managed Agents powered by OpenAI. OpenAI said Codex can now be configured to use Bedrock as its provider. (aws.amazon.com) (openai.com) The sales point for large companies is procurement and control. OpenAI said companies with AWS commitments and Bedrock access can start using Codex through AWS billing, while Amazon said customers keep the security, governance, and operational controls they already use in AWS. (openai.com) (aboutamazon.com) Amazon’s Managed Agents product is aimed at longer-running tasks that need memory, tool use, and audit trails. Amazon says each agent runs with its own identity, logs actions for auditability, and runs inside the customer’s environment. (aws.amazon.com) That agent push started before this week’s launch. On February 27, OpenAI and Amazon said they would co-create a Stateful Runtime Environment for Agents in Bedrock, with persistent orchestration, memory, secure execution, and governance for multi-step workflows. (openai.com 1) (openai.com 2) The February agreement also gave AWS a bigger role in OpenAI’s cloud strategy. OpenAI said AWS would be the exclusive third-party cloud distribution provider for OpenAI Frontier, and Amazon said it would invest $50 billion in OpenAI. (openai.com) This week’s Bedrock preview turns that partnership into a product enterprises can actually buy through their existing Amazon contracts. It also gives AWS a direct channel for selling OpenAI capabilities to customers that want Amazon identity, logging, and billing wrapped around them. (aboutamazon.com) (openai.com) Amazon has not said in its public launch posts when general availability will begin or which specific OpenAI model versions will reach all Bedrock customers first. For now, the company is calling the release a limited preview. (aboutamazon.com) (aws.amazon.com)
