Google Home Gets a Gemini-Powered Camera Feature
Google Home's new Gemini integration can now provide live, descriptive summaries of what's happening on your camera feeds. The update aims to make the smart home platform more context-aware and accessible. The feature, officially named "Live Search," moves beyond analyzing past recordings, allowing users to ask conversational questions about real-time camera feeds. This capability is gated behind a Google Home Premium "Advanced" subscription, a tier priced at $20 per month. This marks a strategic pivot from reactive alerts to proactive, on-demand visual search. Google Home's head of product, Anish Kattukaran, noted that a fundamental limitation of smart home AI was its inability to understand the present; Gemini was previously limited to describing events that had already occurred. The push is part of a broader effort to resurrect Google's smart home ambitions after Kattukaran admitted the division had been in "maintenance mode," lagging behind competitors like Amazon's Alexa. The strategy centers on using Gemini's multimodal AI to move from rigid voice commands to more natural, contextual conversations about the home environment. This camera update doesn't stand alone; it is bundled with other AI-powered tools, including a daily "Home Brief" summarizing all camera events and AI notifications that evolve from a simple "person seen" alert to a more descriptive "a person is riding a bike." The product philosophy extends to home automation, where a related "help me script" feature uses generative AI to translate natural language descriptions into code for complex routines. This allows users without coding experience to create sophisticated automations by simply describing what they want to happen. These enhancements are being rolled out to address significant user complaints about the deteriorating reliability of Google Assistant and Nest devices during the transition to Gemini. Kattukaran publicly apologized for the user experience, framing these updates as part of a commitment to provide a long-term solution.
