InterDigital Renews Patent License with Sony

Technology R&D company InterDigital announced it has signed a new patent license agreement with Sony. The agreement covers patents related to wireless, video, and AI technologies. The terms of the deal were not disclosed.

- Sony and InterDigital's collaboration dates back to at least 2013, when they formed a joint venture called Convida Wireless to research 5G and the Internet of Things (IoT). - The agreement provides Sony access to InterDigital's portfolio of over 30,000 patents and applications, which includes foundational contributions to global standards like 5G, Wi-Fi, HEVC, and VVC. - This license covers all of Sony's end-user devices, impacting products from its smartphones and laptops to connected TVs and PlayStation gaming consoles. - InterDigital's primary business is licensing its intellectual property, which generated a record net income of $406.6 million in 2025, fueled by major agreements with companies like Samsung, HP, and smartphone makers vivo and Honor. - For the full fiscal year 2025, InterDigital reported total revenues of $834.0 million. - Sony also licenses video codec patents through industry pools, having recently joined the VVC Advance Patent Pool as a licensee.
