Texas refinery opens – first in 50 years
The first new U.S. oil refinery in nearly 50 years is opening in Brownsville, TX, with $300B from America First Refining and India’s Reliance Industries announced.
The refinery will be located at the Port of Brownsville, a deep-water port and foreign trade zone. It will process American light shale oil from the Permian Basin. The facility is designed to handle 100% American shale oil, which is lighter than foreign crude, allowing for lower-cost refining and cleaner fuels. America First Refining (AFR) will develop the hydrogen-powered refinery. AFR received a nine-figure investment from a global supermajor in February at a ten-figure valuation. They also signed a 20-year agreement with the same company to purchase, process, and distribute American-produced energy exclusively sourced from American shale oil. The refinery is projected to process 1.2 billion barrels of U.S. shale oil, valued at approximately $125 billion. It's expected to produce around 50 billion gallons of refined petroleum products, valued at roughly $175 billion. The facility will have the capacity to process approximately 60 million barrels per year. The Port of Brownsville offers six liquid cargo docks, 13 general cargo docks, and direct rail connections. The location is an Economic Opportunity Zone, which should drive further investment and job creation in South Texas. The refinery is projected to create thousands of jobs in the region.
