Springer breaks toe

Blue Jays outfielder George Springer fractured his big left toe after fouling a ball off his foot, adding another major injury to Toronto’s early‑season list (usatoday.com). The club already had Shane Bieber, Jose Berrios, Trey Yesavage, Alejandro Kirk, Cody Ponce and Addison Barger on the injured list before Springer’s setback, though team updates also said several starters are progressing toward returns ( ).

George Springer is headed to the injured list after fracturing his left big toe on a foul ball in Toronto’s April 11 loss to Minnesota. (mlb.com) The Blue Jays said on April 12 that Springer was placed on the 10-day injured list, and their injuries page lists a “late April” return as the current expectation after CT scans confirmed the fracture. (mlb.com) Springer was hurt in the third inning at Rogers Centre, finished the at-bat, and then left when his spot came up again later in the game. Toronto lost 7-4 to the Twins. (mlb.com, espn.com) Toronto called up Eloy Jiménez from Triple-A Buffalo for Springer’s roster spot on April 12. Manager John Schneider said after the game that the club would adjust “day by day” if Springer missed time. (sports.yahoo.com, espn.com) The injury lands on a roster that already had José Berríos, Shane Bieber, Trey Yesavage, Alejandro Kirk, Cody Ponce and Addison Barger sidelined, along with other pitchers and outfielders. MLB’s team injury log listed nine other Blue Jays on the injured list before Springer was added. (mlb.com, mlb.com) Some of those absences are not short-term. The Blue Jays said Kirk had surgery on his left thumb on April 7 and is expected to miss about six weeks, while Ponce is set for right knee surgery and is likely out for most or all of 2026. (mlb.com, toronto.citynews.ca) There is also movement on the other side of the ledger. Toronto’s injury updates say Berríos could begin minor-league rehab games next week, Yesavage is nearing what could be his final rehab start, and Bieber has resumed mound work. (mlb.com, si.com) Springer is not just another veteran bat in this lineup. He entered Saturday hitting.189 with two home runs, but he was one of Toronto’s central hitters during its 2025 pennant run, batting.309 with 32 home runs in the regular season, according to ESPN’s game report. (espn.com) For now, the Blue Jays are trying to cover another opening and wait for the calendar to help. Their official injury page says Springer may only need the minimum 10 days, but his return now depends on how quickly a fractured big toe lets him run and hit again. (mlb.com)
