PayPal Partners with CellPoint Digital

PayPal has entered a strategic collaboration with payment orchestration platform CellPoint Digital. The partnership will integrate PayPal's payment options directly into CellPoint's platform, offering more choice to global travel and retail merchants.

This partnership plugs PayPal into the rapidly growing payment orchestration market, a sector that simplifies the increasingly complex web of global online payments for merchants. Payment orchestration platforms act as a central hub, allowing businesses to easily add various payment methods, route transactions intelligently, and improve authorization rates. London-based CellPoint Digital, founded in 2007 by CEO Kristian Gjerding, specializes in this space for the travel and retail industries. The company has raised a total of $108 million, including a recent $30 million funding round in November 2024 to accelerate its global expansion. Clients like Virgin Atlantic and Riyadh Air use its platform to manage payments across numerous providers and currencies. For merchants, this single integration with CellPoint Digital means faster access to PayPal's suite of products, including its digital wallet and "Buy Now, Pay Later" options, without complex individual integrations. This can lead to a significant reduction in payment processing costs and a faster time-to-market for new payment options. CellPoint Digital reports its orchestration platform can increase payment approval rates by 15%. The collaboration is a strategic move for PayPal as it evolves from a simple payment button to a comprehensive commerce platform. Under CEO Alex Chriss, PayPal is focusing on expanding its merchant services and B2B offerings to diversify revenue. In 2024, PayPal processed $1.68 trillion in total payment volume and served 36 million merchants. This deal also highlights PayPal's focus on high-volume sectors like travel. By embedding itself in the payment infrastructure that airlines and large retailers use, PayPal aims to capture more of the trillions of dollars in global B2B and B2C transactions. This follows a trend of strategic partnerships for PayPal, including collaborations with J.P. Morgan Payments and Verifone to deliver more integrated omnichannel payment solutions.
