Mesa KL Blends Spanish-Nikkei Flavors
Kuala Lumpur's Mesa is drawing attention for its sophisticated Spanish fare with a Nikkei twist — think marinated mackerel with yuzu and wasabi, or Ibérico pork paired with miso and Peruvian chillies. The restaurant's sharing-style menu and sleek setting make it a top pick for cutting-edge fusion cuisine in Southeast Asia.
Mesa is the creation of Modesto Marini, founder of The Marini's Group, known for high-end dining experiences like Marini's on 57 and Marble 8 Steakhouse. The restaurant, perched on the 51st floor of the Permata Sapura Tower, offers panoramic views of Kuala Lumpur's skyline, including the Petronas Twin Towers and KLCC Park. The culinary direction is led by chef Alberto Sancassani, a former architect, who crafts a menu rich in authentic Spanish dishes and Nikkei offerings. While Marini emphasizes that the establishment is not "fusion," it uniquely combines a traditional Spanish restaurant with a distinct Nikkei lounge and an outdoor terrace bar all in one space. Nikkei cuisine itself originated in the late 19th century when Japanese immigrants in Peru adapted their traditional cooking techniques to local ingredients like chili peppers and fresh fish from the Pacific. This culinary style is a blend of Japanese precision and respect for fresh ingredients with the vibrant, zesty flavors of Peru. On the menu, this blend is showcased in dishes like the Ceviche Amazzoniko (RM68), which features red snapper and scallops in a mango leche de tigre. The restaurant also offers distinctly Spanish plates like Gambas Ajillo and premium grilled meats, alongside Japanese-inspired items such as A5 Miyazaki Wagyu Sirloin Nigiri (RM80 for two). The venue is designed as a multi-sensory experience, with the elegant Nikkei Lounge featuring a state-of-the-art Void sound system and a resident mixologist. The space aims to transition seamlessly from early evening dining to a vibrant late-night atmosphere. Mesa on 51 joins a growing scene of high-end Nikkei-influenced dining in Kuala Lumpur, which includes notable establishments like Nobu Kuala Lumpur and the more recently opened Torito.
