Delhi Metro Expands Pink and Magenta Lines

Delhi's Metro network has expanded with new corridors on the Pink and Magenta Lines inaugurated by Prime Minister Modi. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said the expansion is aimed at boosting connectivity and promoting more sustainable transport across the capital.

The inauguration of the Majlis Park-Maujpur Babarpur section completes the Pink Line, making it the country's first fully operational "ring metro" at a total length of 71.56 kilometers. This section includes a new bridge over the Yamuna and a double-decker viaduct carrying both a metro track and a road flyover. The Deepali Chowk-Majlis Park corridor extends the Magenta Line to nearly 49 kilometers. This an extension of the Botanical Garden-Krishna Park line and adds seven elevated stations, including Madhuban Chowk, Haiderpur Village, and Bhalswa. These expansions are part of the larger Delhi Metro Phase 4 project, which is expected to add over 65 km of new routes and is targeted for full completion in 2026. The three priority corridors of Phase 4—Aerocity to Tughlakabad, Janakpuri West to RK Ashram, and Maujpur to Majlis Park—have a combined estimated cost of ₹24,948.65 crore. Previous Delhi Metro expansions have been linked to a 20-40% appreciation in property values along the corridors. Beyond real estate, the metro network is credited with significant reductions in traffic congestion, travel time, and air pollution, contributing an estimated ₹100 billion in annual benefits to society. With daily passenger ridership recently reaching up to 71 lakh (7.1 million), the Delhi Metro is India's largest and busiest metro system. The network's expansion is a key component of the city's strategy to accommodate a growing urban population, projected to reach nearly 600 million by 2030. Alongside the inaugurations, the foundation stone was laid for three new corridors under a future Phase 5(A). These include a Central Vista corridor from Ramakrishna Ashram Marg to Indraprastha and extensions of the Golden Line to better connect Indira Gandhi International Airport and parts of South Delhi with the NCR cities of Noida and Faridabad.
