Sunda Opens in Detroit
Southeast Asian restaurant Sunda opened in downtown Detroit, offering a modern "wonderland" of regional flavors. Led by restaurateur Billy Dec, the restaurant features culinary influences from across Southeast Asia with vibrant atmosphere. Detroit's dining scene continues expanding with innovative international concepts.
The Detroit outpost is the fifth Sunda New Asian location, joining two in Chicago and one each in Nashville and Tampa. The original restaurant was founded in Chicago in 2009, with the concept inspired by founder Billy Dec's travels throughout Southeast Asia. Restaurateur Billy Dec is a two-time Emmy Award-winning TV personality, actor, and entrepreneur. In addition to his restaurants, Dec is the CEO of the global advertising agency COACT and can be seen on NBC's TODAY Show. His Filipino heritage was a key inspiration for the restaurant and is explored in his documentary "Food Roots." The 6,000-square-foot restaurant is located at 33 W. Columbia St. in The District Detroit, a pedestrian-friendly area near the Fox Theatre and Little Caesars Arena. The design, a collaboration between Studio K, McIntosh Poris Associates, and Sachse Construction, blends Tokyo street style with Southeast Asian warmth and includes a 1,400-square-foot patio. Sunda's culinary program is led by Culinary Director Mike Morales, a native of Pampanga in the Philippines, and Head Sushi Chef Ise Matsunobu from Tokyo. Signature dishes include Oxtail Potstickers, Spicy Tuna Crispy Rice, and a 3lb Japanese Wagyu Tomahawk Steak. Over the years, the Sunda brand has attracted a significant celebrity clientele, including figures like Michelle Obama, Michael Jordan, Lady Gaga, and Barbra Streisand.
