Ukrainian Fans Slam Mistborn Translation
Ukrainian readers are criticizing poor translation choices for Mistborn, with "Mistborn" becoming "З-імли-народженими" (From-Mist-Born) and "Lord Ruler" translated as "Всевладарем." Fans are also complaining that Era 1 covers resemble "terrible women's fantasy novels," highlighting translation and marketing challenges for epic fantasy in international markets.
The Ukrainian edition of Brandon Sanderson's *Mistborn* is being published by Nebo Booklab Publishing, which is known for producing high-quality books with unique illustrations. The cover art for *The Final Empire* was created by Ukrainian artist Taras Kopanskyi, who also illustrated a Ukrainian edition of Joe Abercrombie's *Half a King*. While many international fans have praised the edition's unique aesthetic and interior illustrations, some Ukrainian readers have criticized the cover's style. This isn't the first time *Mistborn's* cover art has sparked debate among fans. The original U.S. paperback edition had a cover so disliked that author Brandon Sanderson himself called it "dreadful," blaming it for the book's initial commercial failure. Subsequent reprints in the U.S. and various international editions have featured a wide array of artistic styles, from photorealistic depictions to more abstract designs, with each generating its own share of fan discussion and criticism. The translation of key terms in Sanderson's intricate magic system and world-building presents a significant challenge for international publishers. The term "Lord Ruler," for example, has been translated in various ways, including "Seigneur Maître" (Lord Master) in French, "Ostatni Imperator" (The Last Emperor) in Polish, and "Der oberste Herrscher" (The Supreme Ruler) in German. Each translation attempts to capture the character's authority and station within the world's specific context. In the Ukrainian edition, "Lord Ruler" became "Пан Всевладар." According to some Ukrainian fans, "Пан" is a historical honorific analogous to "Lord," while "Всевладар" is a constructed word combining "Все" (all or everything) and "владар" (ruler), roughly translating to "Lord Ruler of Everything." Beyond titles, fans have also pointed out the translation of the protagonist Vin's name to "Вен," which has been a point of contention. The debate highlights the broader complexities of translating neologisms and established fantasy terms for a new audience.
