The current chapter of the feud ignited with Kendrick Lamar's verse on the Future and Metro Boomin track "Like That" in March 2024. On the song, Lamar directly rejected the idea of a "big three" of modern rap—a concept J. Cole had previously articulated on Drake's 2023 track "First Person Shooter"—rapping, "motherf*ck the big three, n***a, it's just big me." This public dismissal escalated a rivalry that had been simmering for over a decade. The two artists, who once collaborated on tracks like "Poetic Justice," saw their relationship sour after Lamar's 2013 guest verse on Big Sean's "Control," where he declared his intent to lyrically "murder" his contemporaries, including Drake.
