Memorial Health has opened signups for “Mindful Miles,” a free regional walking challenge across central Illinois that runs from May 1 through May 31. (memorial.health) The health system said kickoff parties are scheduled for April 30 in Decatur, Jacksonville, Lincoln, Springfield and Taylorville, with each Memorial Health hospital serving as a local hub. (memorial.health) Participants can join through the Pacer phone app, and anyone who logs 50 miles or more during May will receive a free Mindful Miles T-shirt. (memorial.health) Memorial Health is describing the effort as its first regional walking challenge, expanding beyond a single campus program into a systemwide event tied to multiple communities. (nationaltoday.com) The program is built around spring walking and Mental Health Awareness Month in May. Galia Cossyleon, a community health consultant at Springfield Memorial Hospital, said organizers wanted to pair physical activity with mental wellbeing as residents head outdoors in warmer weather. (capitolcitynow.com) Angela Stoltzenburg, Memorial Health’s director of community health, said the challenge is meant to get people to “log their miles in May” and framed walking as a low-cost activity that requires “a pair of comfortable shoes and a little time.” (memorial.health) Springfield Memorial Hospital already has a marked one-mile route around its campus called the Memorial Mile, a path the system has promoted as an outdoor walking option since 2025. (memorial.health) Local coverage has described the challenge as lightly competitive, with some hospital campuses offering walking trails and organizers emphasizing participation over racing for rank. (capitolcitynow.com) For Memorial Health, the next date on the calendar is April 30, when the five-city kickoff events begin ahead of a month of tracked walks in May. (memorial.health)
