Command & Conquer Renegade Returns

After 20 years, fans released a spiritual successor to the shooter Command & Conquer: Renegade. This labor of love aims to capture the intense, base-focused battles that defined the original's unique blend of FPS and real-time strategy gameplay.

The original *Command & Conquer: Renegade* was developed by Westwood Studios and released in February 2002. It was the first and only game in the franchise's history to be a first-person shooter, placing players directly onto the battlefields they had previously only seen from a top-down strategic view. This new project, titled *Renegade X*, was developed by the volunteer indie team Totem Arts. The fan-led project began development as a mod for *Unreal Tournament 3* around 2007 before evolving into a free-to-play standalone game built on the Unreal Engine. The core gameplay, known as "C&C Mode," pits the Global Defense Initiative (GDI) against the Brotherhood of Nod in large-scale battles. Each team must protect its base, which contains structures like a Power Plant, Barracks, and Weapons Factory, all of which are critical for the team's economy and ability to produce advanced units. Players earn credits by killing enemies and destroying vehicles, which they can then use to purchase more powerful character classes and iconic vehicles like the Mammoth Tank. The ultimate goal is to destroy the enemy's key structures, crippling their production and achieving victory, with some matches culminating in the use of superweapons like the Ion Cannon or a Nuclear Strike. After more than a decade in public beta, which started in 2014, *Renegade X* has now reached its full 1.0 release. The development team at Totem Arts has also announced they are working on *Firestorm*, a new title inspired by *Command & Conquer: Tiberian Sun*.
