Unified Data Catalogs for AI Governance

BigID and Atlan have partnered to create the first unified data catalog for both structured and unstructured data. The goal is to provide a single control plane for AI governance, streamlining data discovery, classification, and lineage for building reliable AI models.

The partnership between BigID and Atlan addresses a critical bottleneck in enterprise AI adoption: the inability to govern both structured and unstructured data simultaneously. Most organizations lack visibility into the unstructured and sensitive data that feeds their AI models, creating significant risk and compliance exposure. This collaboration brings BigID's data discovery and security intelligence into Atlan's active metadata platform, creating a unified view. New York-based BigID, founded in 2016, specializes in data security, privacy, and compliance, utilizing machine learning for data discovery and classification. Atlan, founded in 2018 and also headquartered in New York, provides an AI-driven metadata management and data governance platform. BigID has raised a total of $308 million, while Atlan has secured $206 million in funding. The joint solution works by automatically syncing BigID's classification of sensitive data as metadata tags directly into Atlan's platform. Policy violation alerts from BigID, such as PII exposure or regulatory breaches, appear as announcements within Atlan's data catalog, enabling teams to take immediate action. This integration makes BigID the first Data Security Posture Management (DSPM) partner in the Atlan Marketplace. This unified approach is crucial as poor data quality costs organizations an average of $12.9 million annually. Fragmented systems are a major hurdle to AI governance adoption for 58% of organizations. Without a cohesive view, AI models may be trained on biased, outdated, or poorly handled data, leading to misleading outputs and regulatory issues. The collaboration aims to bridge the gap between Chief Data Officers (CDOs) and Chief Information Security Officers (CISOs), fostering trusted collaboration for responsible AI adoption.
