Angie Stone's Son Continues Legacy
One year after Atlanta singer Angie Stone's death, her son Swayvo Twain is carrying forward her legacy. Twain, who is also the son of late soul legend D'Angelo, is set to release his debut album later this year. This generational hand-off represents both tribute and testament to the enduring power of soul and R&B in shaping contemporary music.
Angie Stone first made history long before her solo career, as a member of the hip-hop trio The Sequence. In 1979, their track "Funk You Up" became the first rap single released by a female group. Stone's solo work in the late 90s and early 2000s, including albums like *Black Diamond* and *Mahogany Soul*, established her as a cornerstone of the neo-soul movement. Her acclaimed singles "No More Rain (In This Cloud)" and "Wish I Didn't Miss You" earned her multiple Grammy nominations. Swayvo Twain's father, D'Angelo, was also a chief architect of neo-soul, reshaping the sound of R&B in the 90s. His 1995 debut *Brown Sugar* was a landmark album, and its 2000 follow-up, *Voodoo*, won a Grammy for Best R&B Album. Stone and D'Angelo's personal relationship in the mid-90s was also a creative partnership. Stone was a credited co-writer on D'Angelo's debut album, and he contributed to her work as well, intertwining their musical DNA. The loss of Angie Stone in March 2025 was compounded by tragedy later that year. D'Angelo passed away just seven months later in October 2025, leaving their son to carry the weight of two monumental legacies.
