Special Olympics Vermont Fundraising Nears Goal

The annual Penguin Plunge at Lake Champlain, a major Vermont event supporting Special Olympics athletes, is set for March 13th in Burlington after being rescheduled. Organizers are on track to surpass a $500,000 fundraising goal by Saturday. Over 1,000 participants are expected, including schools, businesses, and community members.

The Penguin Plunge is now in its 31st year and supports over 2,900 Special Olympics athletes with intellectual and developmental disabilities across Vermont. Funds raised provide year-round sports training, competitions, and health programs for these athletes. The event was originally scheduled for February 7th but was postponed to March 13th-14th. The decision to postpone was made after consulting with local officials, the National Weather Service, and meteorologists. The "Cool Schools Plunge" encourages participation from students, teachers, and campus communities, with a fundraising minimum of $150 per participant. Top fundraisers and teams are recognized on a leaderboard, promoting friendly competition.
