First In-Person Worldbuilding Conference Announced
The first-ever in-person conference dedicated to speculative fiction worldbuilding, SpecCon 2026, has been announced. The event promises to bring together high-profile speakers and creators for networking and discussion. This marks a significant new professional event for writers, designers, and other creators in the sci-fi and fantasy genres.
The inaugural SpecCon is scheduled for June 6th, 2026, at Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland. This one-day conference will feature talks and workshops on a variety of worldbuilding topics, including speculative biology, constructed languages, and fantasy geography. The event is being organized by YouTuber Madeline James and is an extension of her previously held online "Worldbuilding Festival". The stated goal is to start with a smaller, intimate conference with plans to become a biennial event, potentially moving to North America for the next iteration. The initial speaker lineup features prominent YouTubers and creators from the online worldbuilding community. Announced speakers include Artifexian, Biblaridion, David and Jessie Peterson (the latter known for creating languages for "Game of Thrones"), Jake Penny, and Worldbuilding Pasta. While larger, more established conventions like Worldcon and World Fantasy Convention have long served the broader sci-fi and fantasy community, SpecCon is notable for its specific focus on the craft of worldbuilding itself. This tight focus distinguishes it from events with a wider range of topics like gaming, cosplay, or general speculative fiction. Tickets for the event are limited to 200 seats, reflecting the organizers' desire for a more focused and personal gathering for its first year. The conference will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with unofficial social gatherings like a group dinner planned for attendees and creators. The creation of an in-person conference dedicated to worldbuilding reflects a growing professionalization and community around this specific aspect of speculative fiction. While many online resources and virtual conferences on the topic exist, SpecCon marks a significant step towards creating a dedicated real-world networking and professional development space for these creators.
