"Snail Mail" Social Network Raises $2.75M

A former Disney Channel star and an ex-Apple engineer have closed a $2.75M seed round for Escargot, a startup aiming to turn physical mail into a social network. The "retro-tech" play demonstrates investor appetite for differentiated platforms targeting Gen Z's desire for authentic, tactile experiences.

The $2.75M seed round was co-led by Wischoff Ventures and Hannah Grey Ventures, with participation from notable early-stage investors including South Park Commons and Magic Fund. The capital is earmarked for advancing the platform's AI-driven features and for scaling its physical card delivery infrastructure to handle increased volume. The company's founders are cousins Aaron Albert and Andrew Gold. Gold, the CEO, is a former software engineer with experience at both Apple and Coinbase. Albert is a two-time founder and Kellogg MBA who previously founded Felt, a digital mental health company that grew to 200,000 users and $10 million in annual recurring revenue before a successful exit. Escargot's app uses AI to help users create personalized cards and analyzes user calendars and contacts to suggest occasions for sending physical mail. This approach directly targets what managing partner at Hannah Grey VC, Jessica Peltz Zatulove, calls a "clear market arbitrage between the declining value of a social media 'like' and the rising value of a physical gesture." The startup is entering a U.S. greeting card market estimated to be worth $7.1 billion in 2025. Individual cards are priced around $8, with subscription models starting at about $10 per month for two card credits, targeting a user base with a significant number of birthdays after the year 2000. Escargot is part of a larger "retro tech" trend that has seen Gen Z and millennials embrace more tangible, analog technologies like instant cameras and record players. This movement is seen as a reaction against the purely digital nature of mainstream social media, with consumers seeking more authentic and less ephemeral ways to connect.
