Salmon Recalled Over Listeria Fears
Slade Gorton & Co., Inc. has issued a recall for one lot of Wellsley Farms Farm-Raised Atlantic Salmon due to potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes. The affected products were sold at BJ’s Wholesale Club locations. Customers are being advised to return the salmon for a full refund.
The recalled 2-lb bags of Wellsley Farms Farm-Raised Atlantic Salmon are from lot number 3896 and have a UPC code of 888670025963. The affected salmon was sold between January 31 and February 7, 2026, in BJ's stores across seven states: Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. The contamination was discovered after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration collected a random sample of the product which tested positive for *Listeria monocytogenes*. Slade Gorton & Co., Inc. is investigating the source of the contamination and, as of the recall announcement, no illnesses have been reported. *Listeria monocytogenes* is a resilient bacterium that can survive and multiply in refrigerated temperatures. This makes it a particular concern for ready-to-eat and cold-smoked fish products. The bacteria can be found in soil, water, and animal waste, and can contaminate food at various points in the production process. Symptoms of listeriosis in healthy individuals are often mild and can include fever, muscle aches, nausea, and diarrhea. However, the infection can be severe for older adults, people with weakened immune systems, and pregnant women, for whom it can lead to miscarriage, stillbirth, or life-threatening infection in the newborn.
