All Blacks Prop Banned Three Weeks
Crusaders and All Blacks prop Tamaiti Williams received a three-week suspension for dangerous play during Saturday's Super Rugby Pacific victory over the Chiefs. The ban was announced just 11 minutes before press time, removing Williams from critical upcoming matches and creating selection challenges for both the Crusaders and All Blacks coaching staff.
The incident, which went unseen by match officials, occurred 15 minutes into the game when Williams' shoulder made direct contact with the head of Chiefs lock and All Blacks teammate Tupou Vaa'i during a ruck cleanout. Vaa'i was seen falling backwards and clutching his head after the contact. The Super Rugby Pacific Foul Play Review Committee assessed the illegal cleanout as a "mid-range entry point" offense, which carries a six-week suspension. Williams' ban was halved due to his clean disciplinary record, his remorse, and his acceptance that he committed an act of foul play. Williams will miss three crucial upcoming Super Rugby Pacific matches: away to the Blues on March 7, a home game against the Highlanders on March 14, and another away fixture versus Moana Pasifika on March 21. He may be able to return for the Moana Pasifika match by participating in World Rugby's Coaching Intervention Programme, which can substitute for the final week of the sanction if he completes it successfully. The suspension exacerbates front-row injury concerns for Crusaders coach Rob Penney, with fellow All Blacks hookers Codie Taylor and George Bell also recently sidelined with injuries.
