Iran & Israel Trade Retaliatory Strikes
The Middle East is on high alert after Iran launched a wave of missile and drone attacks, forcing millions of Israelis into bomb shelters. The strikes are retaliation for the assassination of its supreme leader. In response, Israeli and U.S. airstrikes have pounded targets across Iran, including in the capital, Tehran, as the conflict enters a dangerous new phase.
For decades, a "shadow war" between Iran and Israel consisted of covert operations, cyber-attacks, and assassinations of nuclear scientists. This fragile stalemate has now shattered, moving the long-simmering conflict into direct and open warfare for the first time. Iran possesses the largest ballistic missile arsenal in the Middle East, with some capable of reaching targets up to 2,000 kilometers away. Its drone program is also extensive, featuring "kamikaze" drones like the Shahed-136. In response to the initial assassination, Iran launched hundreds of missiles and drones targeting not only Israel but also U.S. military bases in neighboring Gulf countries. Israel's defense is a multi-layered system, heavily supported by the United States. It includes the long-range Arrow-3 for exo-atmospheric threats, the mid-range David's Sling, and the well-known Iron Dome for short-range rockets. More recently, Israel has deployed the "Iron Beam" laser defense system to counter low-cost threats like drones. The United States has directly intervened in the conflict, launching strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities at Fordow, Isfahan, and Natanz. U.S. military bases throughout the region, including in Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates, have been targeted by Iranian retaliatory strikes. The international community is divided. Western allies like the U.S., U.K., and Canada have voiced support for Israel's actions, while Russia and China have condemned the strikes on Iran. Gulf states, including Saudi Arabia and the UAE, have condemned Iran's attacks on their territory, creating a complex and tense diplomatic landscape. The conflict has already caused significant disruption, with airports in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Kuwait sustaining damage and forcing flight cancellations across the region. The potential for a wider war remains a serious concern, with fears of escalating proxy conflicts and major impacts on global oil markets.
