Snowflake & OpenAI Ink $200M AI Agent Deal
Snowflake and OpenAI just inked a multi-year, $200M partnership to embed agentic AI into the data cloud. The deal aims to unlock AI agents for Snowflake's 12,600+ enterprise customers. Early pilots are focused on "AI analyst" agents that can synthesize and narrate compensation and performance data for HR and finance teams.
The partnership, announced on February 2, 2026, makes OpenAI's models, including GPT-5.2, natively available within Snowflake's Cortex AI layer. This allows joint customers like Canva and WHOOP to build AI applications on their own data without moving it outside of Snowflake's secure environment. The collaboration centers on the idea that enterprise AI will be most effective when it runs where the corporate data already resides. For Snowflake, this deal accelerates its evolution from a data warehouse into a comprehensive platform for enterprise AI workloads. It strategically positions OpenAI as a primary model provider within Snowflake's ecosystem, which also includes models from Google, Meta, and Anthropic. Snowflake CEO Sridhar Ramaswamy noted this is about practical business deployment, aiming to prevent enterprise software from being reduced to simple "data pipes" in the age of central AI intelligence. For OpenAI, the alliance provides significant enterprise distribution independent of its partnership with Microsoft. OpenAI COO Brad Lightcap stated the goal is to make advanced models easier to use within large organizations by bringing them directly into the systems they already trust. This move is part of a broader strategy to close the gap between AI's potential and its practical, secure deployment in core business processes. The integration will be available to Snowflake customers across all major cloud providers: Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud. Both companies are also engaging in joint go-to-market strategies and co-innovation on new features leveraging OpenAI's APIs and SDKs to build custom AI agents. This builds on an existing relationship where OpenAI already uses Snowflake for internal analytics and experiment tracking. This partnership intensifies the competition with rivals like Databricks, which focuses on a lakehouse architecture for engineering-heavy AI and machine learning workloads. While Databricks emphasizes a code-centric, full-stack AI development approach, Snowflake's strategy with Cortex AI is to embed AI functions directly into SQL-friendly workflows, serving both developers and business analysts. Success for the partnership hinges on moving customers from AI experimentation to production workloads that generate measurable value. While Snowflake's Ramaswamy noted AI was influencing 50% of bookings in late 2025, the key is converting that interest into actual AI consumption revenue, not just traditional data warehousing spend. The focus is on enabling agents to handle complex, cross-functional workflows like late payment prediction in finance or ticket triage in customer service.
