US Develops 'LUCAS' Drone Swarms from Iranian Design

The US has developed the LUCAS drone, reportedly reverse-engineered from Iran's Shahed-136, designed for use in low-cost swarms. With a 403-mile range, the drone reflects a new military doctrine focused on using attritable, autonomous systems to saturate and overwhelm advanced air defenses at scale.

The LUCAS (Low-cost Uncrewed Combat Attack System) drone was developed by Arizona-based SpektreWorks in cooperation with the U.S. military. U.S. Central Command's "Task Force Scorpion Strike" was established specifically for its deployment and used the drones in combat for the first time on February 28, 2026, during Operation Epic Fury against targets in Iran. The development is a direct challenge to the economics of air defense. At approximately $35,000 per unit, LUCAS provides a cost-effective way to saturate enemy air defenses, which may use missiles costing over $1 million per intercept. This strategy of "affordable mass" aims to deplete an adversary's more expensive and limited defensive stockpiles. While visually similar to the Shahed-136, the American variant is lighter and smaller, with a 10-foot length and 8-foot wingspan. It is powered by a two-cylinder DA-215 internal combustion engine, which provides a reduced acoustic signature compared to the four-cylinder engine in the Iranian model, making it harder to detect by sound. Operational flexibility is a key design feature, with the drone being runway-independent. LUCAS can be deployed using pneumatic catapults or rocket-assisted takeoff (RATO) systems, allowing for launches from mobile trucks or naval vessels like the USS Santa Barbara, which test-launched a unit in the Persian Gulf. The system's design incorporates features for autonomous coordination, enabling network-centric strikes and swarm tactics. Some drones are equipped with Starlink terminals for dynamic targeting and advanced cooperative maneuvers, allowing a human to remain in the loop while multiple drones operate as a cohesive unit.
